Gyasi Zardes is a soccer forward for the Columbus Crew SC. Born in September 1991, he was drafted into the United States soccer development academy at the age of 14.

He played for the Galaxy Academy Under-18 squad in 2008 and the Galaxy Academy Under-20 squad in 2009. He played his college soccer for CSU Bakersfield, and in 2010, he helped the Galaxy’s U-20 team win a national championship.

Zardes grew up in Hawthorne, California, and was spotted by the L.A. Galaxy when he was just 16 years old.

Gyasi Zardes first played for the Galaxy Academy during the 2008-09 season and then worked his way up the ranks. His development as a player was rewarded with a call-up to the club’s USL Super-20 affiliate.

Despite being only 19, Zardes has already shown that he has potential as a wide midfielder and forward. After signing with the LA Galaxy in 2012, he was called up to the USA’s MNT in January 2015. He earned his first start in March of that same year and had a breakout year. He also played a key role in the USA’s fourth-place finish at the 2016 Copa America Centenario. Zardes was also a star at CSU Bakersfield, helping the school to make a run to the NCAA Division I Tournament. After signing with the LA Galaxy, he scored 34 goals in 131 appearances.

Before signing with the Galaxy, Zardes played for the Galaxy Academy Under-18 squads in 2008 and 2009. He also played for the USL Super-20 squads in 2009 and 2010. During those seasons, he helped lead the Galaxy to their third title in four years.

Gyasi Zardes made 12 appearances for the U.S. Men's National Team in 2016. He played in 11 of those appearances as a starting midfielder, scoring three goals and adding an assist in the process. He was a member of the USMNT's Copa America Centenario squad, making six starts in that tournament. Zardes made a goal against Ecuador and assisted on another goal against Bolivia. During his 12 appearances, he played more minutes than any other USMNT player that year, earning 1,403 minutes in total. He was also tied for the most caps with 19 with defender DeAndre Yedlin.

In addition to his appearances for the Men’s National Team, Zardes made six appearances for the Atlanta United FC during the regular season, including one start. His first appearance on the U.S.MNT was on January 28, and he scored his first goal against Seattle Sounders FC on September 7. He then made two consecutive starts against the Colorado Rapids on September 15 and Atlanta United on October 21. On September 22, he scored his 50th goal, and his first hat-trick of the season came against Minnesota United in the season finale.

In addition to MLS standouts, Zardes made 12 appearances for the U,S. Men’s National Team in 2016. In addition to Gyasi Zardes, the Columbus Crew and New York Red Bulls have three players on the squad. The Red Bulls’ defender Aaron Long is on the verge of earning his first cap. Overall, the roster included 12 players from the domestic league.
