However, Sargent has had to battle a long period of critical disfavor. The artist’s reputation has increased steadily since the 1950s, when new scholarship and the Victorian art revival rekindled the interest in his work. Since the mid-1960s, he has enjoyed major museum exhibitions and tours. In 1986, he was honored with a retrospective at the Whitney Museum of American Art, and in 1999, he was included in a traveling exhibition at the Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art in Bentonville, Arkansas.
John Singer Sargent was a lifelong bachelor and had a large circle of friends. His friends included Oscar Wilde and Violet Paget. He was also likely the lover of Albert de Belleroche. Although most of Sargent’s biographers portrayed him as a staid man, recent scholarship has argued that he was deeply private and passionate. The artist’s sexuality was a part of his art, and his personal life was an integral part of it.
During his career, Sargent lived in France. His mother believed that traveling throughout Europe would provide an adequate education, despite the lack of a formal schooling system. His mother, a talented amateur painter, encouraged the artist to do sketches while on excursions. Sargent copied images from the Illustrated London News and made detailed sketches of landscapes.
