Format for World Cup 2022 tournament
The 2022 World Cup will be similar to previous editions. There will be a 32-team group stage that reduces the field to 16 teams. Only the top two teams in each of the eight groups will survive.
These 16 teams from each group will move on to the single-game knockout stage — Round of 16, Quarterfinals, Semi-finals, Final — where the winner goes on and the loser goes home. Every knockout-round match must have a winner. Extra time and penalty kicks may be used if necessary to determine who is victor.
