He played two seasons at Maryland Terrapins

The 6-foot-3, 190-pound goalie played every minute for the Terrapins during his first two seasons at Maryland. He also led Maryland to the College Cup Final in 2014. After earning All-American honors and being named Most Valuable Defensive Player of the NCAA Championship, Steffen left Maryland in December 2014 for a pro career with SC Freiburg in Germany. The team didn’t have a successful season, allowing 12 goals to get past Steffen.

Before leaving college, Steffen was already a highly regarded soccer prospect. His first season at Maryland saw him lead the Terps to a conference title and the College Cup final. He also won the Big Ten's top defensive honors. Steffen's incredible success led to a contract with a German Bundesliga team. However, the ongoing coronavirus outbreak has taken its toll on Steffen's career. Although he still has some great memories from his time at Maryland, he's now in the professional ranks.

He will join Manchester City in summer 2019

Middlesbrough have won the race to sign Zack Steffen and have reached an agreement with Manchester City over a loan deal. The Championship club were also interested in Karl Darlow and Manchester United’s Tom Heaton but have opted to sign Steffen instead. Steffen has been with Manchester City since the summer of 2019 and was immediately loaned out to Fortuna Dusseldorf. He will play for the EFL Championship side and is expected to undergo a medical on Tuesday.

Manchester City are expected to pay PS7 million to PS10 million to sign Zack Steffen on a four-year deal. The deal is expected to close on July 9 and would be the highest fee ever for a keeper.

He has a knee injury

Zack Steffen is the back-up goalkeeper for Manchester City. The former Fortuna Dusseldorf goalkeeper spent a year on loan with the club and was a key part of the team’s success. He was second-choice behind Ederson in his first season at the club. After the season, he signed with SC Freiburg in Germany and spent two seasons there. Steffen returned to the US in 2016 to join the Columbus Crew and then the Pittsburgh Riverhounds on loan. In 2018, Steffen won his first senior international goalkeeping cap for the USA.

The Manchester City goalkeeper is expected to miss 4-6 weeks of action following the injury. It is unclear if this knee injury is the same as the one he suffered in a practice match last fall, but the club did say that he will be out for a lengthy period of time. While it is unclear whether Steffen’s injury is the same as the one he sustained last fall, the news is certainly bad news for the club as they prepare for the start of the German Bundesliga season on May 9.

He is competing for a spot on the U.S. World Cup roster

Steffen, from Coatesville, Pennsylvania, has been on loan at Middlesbrough this season. He played nine times for Manchester City last season. The United States is in first place in the Concacaf qualifying competition. Three of the eight teams will earn automatic berths to the World Cup in Qatar, and the fourth will play in an intercontinental playoff. Steffen made two important saves in the first half of Tuesday’s match against Mexico. The United States won 2-0.

The United States is expected to name its squad on Nov. 9. Zack Steffen is a leading candidate for a spot on the roster. But he is facing stiff competition from Matt Turner, who signed with Arsenal. Turner has started 17 games for the US in the last year, while Steffen has only started six.
