But he never forgot the people who helped him get to where he is today. One of those people is John Metchie, his former high school football coach.

On the eve of Alabama's primetime matchup with LSU, Smith took to Twitter to share a touching tribute to Metchie.

"I want to take a moment to thank Coach Metchie for everything," Smith wrote. "He was more than just a coach to me, he was a father figure, a mentor, and a friend.

taught me so much about the game of football and life." Smith went on to say that Metchie was one of the biggest reasons he chose to play for Alabama.

"He always believed in me and pushed me to be the best player and person I could be," Smith wrote. "I'm so grateful to have had him in my life.

He took over the program in 2016, and has led the team to a 28-5 record over the last three seasons.
